A Thank You note from the

San Juan Slam Tournament Director

The success of the 4^th Annual San Juan Slam Tournament was only possible due to our sponsors, in-kind sponsors, the very professional referee corps, and the volunteers. It was great to see a couple of new faces out there this year. A lot of positive comments were shared with me about the kindness and friendliness of everyone who had a hand in pulling off another successful event. Thank you to all the tournament players for joining us, exhibiting great sportsmanship, and putting on a great show for all the spectators. We hope to see you again next year.

Jeanne Jambor, Registration Director

Jeanne spent a lot of time working on bracket skill levels and age groups this year. We tried to separate out by age group, and had some growing pains, but in the end, it worked out pretty well.  It seems so easy on the surface, but countless hours and collaboration are spent making this successful. She worked closely with Gigi Guerra, Mark, and Lenon Farkash to keep play fair and competitive.

Dreamweaver Spielman, Media Director

Do you like seeing all the photos on Facebook, our RPC website, and everywhere else on social media and local media? You can thank DW for all that. The local paper, radio spots, and advertising to pickleball clubs in several states is all because of her. She is the official photographer all weekend and publishes the Dogs of the San Juan Slam, a perennial fan favorite. I was encouraging people to seek her out so they would be featured in this year’s edition, which was sponsored by Ridgway Animal Hospital.

Additionally, this year she took on the role of Graphics Designer, a whole new field for her, building on the creative work from Robin Camfield. She did a great job with posters, t-shirts, flyers, print ads, and the massive banner over the newly constructed Sherman Street town display.

Clark Gilbert, Infrastructure and Supplies Director, RPC President, and key Ridgway liaison

Clark did a great job of getting the water jugs, tables, tents for scoring table, and the all-important port-potties on site for the tournament. His interface with the town was crucial for a successful tournament.

Lots of time and effort was put in by the cadre that was our sponsorship team. They continued keeping the support of our presenting, repeat and dedicated sponsors, and a few new ones as well. Without the local support of our sponsors, the SJS would not be possible. (Volunteers, too.)

Ellie Kehmeier, Budget Director

Ellie kept us on track with our budget and expenses this year. She also did plenty of other volunteering during the tournament. Thanks, Ellie.

Mandy Baril, Volunteer Coordinator

Mandy did a great job setting up times and getting volunteers to fill the many roles it takes to run a successful event of this size. When she asked, most of you answered the call, and you are all appreciated.

Mandy also plugged any holes in the volunteer slots, picked up coffee each day, and made lunch for the referees. Whew.

There are a few other people who deserve a special thank you as well.  

Rustin Weaver

Rustin volunteered his PA system and was there every day to set it up and take it down at the end of play. It was critical for announcing matches, playing the Dolly Parton National Anthem each morning, and holding player instruction meetings at the start of each bracket.

Lenon Farkash, Tournament Play Consultant

Lenon’s collaboration with Mark, JJ, and Pickleballbrackets Consultant, Gigi Guerra, helped in setting up brackets and relieving Mark so he could participate in play. He is a very active member in the local pickleball scene.

Referees

We are fortunate to have USA Pickleball certified referees that are willing to volunteer in our tournament. Head Referee Kent Davenport, his wife Tresa, Maxine Behrman, Lorrie Martin, Peggy Mewes, and Eileen Egloff gave our tournament a very professional boost. Thank you all so much.

There were so many volunteers, I hesitate to thank them by name in case I forget someone. But, here goes. Your willingness to step up when needed, sign up for time slots, and fill in with many last-minute tasks is SO APPRECIATED.
